As the fourth most densely populated country in Europe, with a coastline of more than 7,600 kilometres and four neighbouring countries (France, Slovenia, Austria and Switzerland), Italy is not only popular with tourists but also an ideal country for international trade relations. The southern European country with cities like Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Palermo is one of the largest economies in the EU and the world. Thanks to its location on the Mediterranean Sea, Italy is ideal for doing business efficiently and successfully.

The country mainly imports and exports machinery/equipment, metal products, chemicals and textile goods. Italy's main trading partners are: Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands and the United States.

For transport to and from this interesting transport country, it is only logical for you as a company – together with Seacon as your professional partner – to take your logistics to a higher level. On this page, you can read more about our transport solutions for Italy.

Major transport routes Italy and your benefits

Whether it is road freight, rail transport, sea freight or air freight, as one of the largest economies in the world, Italy is well equipped for transport.

Italy has one of the best developed road networks. About 6200 km of (privatised) highways connect all the country's cities. The A1 is the busiest route, connecting Milan, Rome, Florence, Bologna and Naples in the south of the country.

Despite supposed transport problems due to its geographical location near the Alps, rail freight transport functions perfectly. Tens of thousands of kilometres of track connect all major cities, allowing us to bring your goods across the country on high-speed lines.

The same applies to air freight. With a large number of airports, Italy can be reached directly and your goods reach their destination quickly, where possible we do so in combination with intermodal transport options. The largest airport is in Rome (Rome-Fiumicinio). In the highly industrialised north, there are also several other important ports of refuge.

With the country's vast Mediterranean coastline, goods are also shipped efficiently and quickly through the country's deep-sea ports.Gioia Tauro, Genoa, Trieste and Taranto are the main cargo ports on the west coast. For the Adriatic and southern coasts, Venice and Brindisi are very important. So all in all, the country is perfect for global transport

Key cities for freight transport in Italy

In Italy, the various industrial areas are spread throughout the country. Certain logistics centres generate the largest turnover in the country.

The first is the capital Rome: its central location makes it a hub for transport between north and south. In addition, Rome has the country's largest airport (Rome-Fiumicinio) and much of its industry, government and population is located in or around the capital.

Naples fulfils a role as a smaller economic centre of Italy with many family-run businesses. But one centre stands out: Lombardy. Called Italy's economic engine, this region is also one of the four strongest economic regions in the EU. Despite its small size (compared to Italy as a whole), both industrial production and the country's economic wealth are found in this region. Its convenient location in relation to neighbouring countries Switzerland, Austria and nearby France makes exchange and trade ideal. Do you also want to benefit from Italy's economic strength? Groupage Italy - LCL and LTL

The term LTL (Less Than Truck Load) is used in freight transport to indicate that only part of the available cargo space of the truck is filled. In the logistics industry, it is therefore common to combine several partial loads at one loading point or to add a partial load. In short, groupage or LTL is therefore the merging of several smaller loads into one larger load. This optimises the use of the freight container during road freight.

The abbreviation LCL stands for Less than Container Load and in sea freight refers to shipments that do not fill an entire container and are combined with other general cargo in a consolidated container. LCL transport mainly offers price advantages and some benefits in practical handling and stowage. For general cargo, only proportionate transport costs are incurred for the use of the container volume.

Full loads Italy - FCL or FTL

The abbreviation FCL (Full Container Load) is used in sea freight for full container loads. Unlike LCL: a load that only partially fills a container. With FCL loads, the container is loaded by a shipper and unloaded at the destination by a consignee.

With an FTL delivery (Full Truck Load), the shipment fills the entire available cargo space. The truck transports this shipment to its destination without reloading. This is for one recipient. This completely utilises the truck’s transport capacity.

Fast delivery is the main advantage of FTL. This is because there is no need for transhipment or extra route planning to different recipients. The truck drives directly to one destination. It is the most effective method of transporting goods by road to a final destination.

Incoterms®: Protect your international trade with Italy

As a global logistics chain director, Seacon Logistics deals a lot with Incoterms®. Although we are not involved in the commercial agreements between buyer and seller, we are often consulted about the dangers and consequences of the various Incoterms® before a transaction is concluded. In practice, many companies still underestimate the risks.

To ensure that contractual formulas in the trade of goods are interpreted equally by buyer and seller, we have created a white paper and an infographic.

Important additional information: Public holidays, driving bans and local details

The regions surrounding Italy's neighbouring countries are particularly heavy with freight traffic. That is why the Italian authorities here strictly check for possible traffic violations. In general, there are some particulars to consider when transporting goods in Italy and the Schengen area of the European Union. We have listed the important information for you:

  • Sunday driving ban: In Italy, there is a general Sunday driving ban for trucks, just as in Germany. Between 7am/9pm and 10pm, it is forbidden to drive on freight roads on Sundays and public or regional holidays.
  • Cabotage transport (domestic transport performed by a carrier established in another EU Member State): Cabotage transport must comply with Italian wage and social regulations. This includes minimum wage, holidays and workplace conditions. We are happy to give you independent advice on this to avoid problems of a legal nature.
  • EU membership: Depending on the project, you will need an EU permit or CEMT permit for international transport. See also the bilateral licences between Italy and third countries.
  • Particularity Brenner Autobahn (from Innsbruck to the Brenner Pass): Drivers who break the ban on overtaking for trucks on the A22 twice within 2 years will have their driving licence revoked for 3 months. Because of the special importance of the highway, the rules here are stricter than elsewhere.

If you have more detailed questions about the specifics or rules in Italy, please feel free to contact our team. In a joint logistic analysis, we examine which aspects are relevant for your goods transport.
